Oregon AFSCME is hosting a Volunteer Member Organizer (VMO) training the weekend of April 5-6 in Portland, and is looking for as many as 25 volunteers.

This VMO training will be a canvass of Portland-area fair share members of both Local 328 (OHSU) and Local 132 (Child Care Providers Together). Historically, the union understands that in many cases, fair share payers aren't members simply because no one has ever asked them.

Hilary Mortensen of the Council 75 Organizing Department is the contact person for the event.

"Meals will be provided, and we're also paying for hotel costs for people who travel from outside of the Portland area," she says. "We are in need of any bilingual or multilingual folks in particular, that would be fantastic. The child care providers, for example, have a number of Russian-speaking members in addition to those who speak Spanish. Local 328 has many Asian-American members. So we can use anyone with extra language skills, but if you only speak English, we very much want you, too."

For more information, e-mail Mortensen or call her at the Portland office, (503) 239-9858 or (800) 792-0045.
