Union releases list of General Election endorsements

Kitzhaber for governor tops the list; 27 state legislators receive automatic endorsements

AFSCME retiree Pat Riggs-Henson is in a runoff for Lane County Commissioner. She's shown here with Council 75 Executive Director Ken Allen.
OREGON STATE SENATE

AFSCME's endorsement process has been completed for most races to be contested in the Nov. 2 Oregon General Election. Below you will find a list that is current as of this posting.

Council 75 still has a handful of legislative races to determine. Most of the unfinished business is simply due to summertime scheduling conflicts, plus in one case an endorsed candidate dropped out of his race. It is also likely a few more local union endorsements will trickle in. Please note this endorsement list is repeated in our Election Central tab of the Main Menu, and the Election Central listing will be continuously updated as needed.

At the top of the ballot, the union has endorsed John Kitzhaber for governor. In the Oregon Legislature, the list is highlighted by six state senators and 21 state representatives that earned automatic endorsements. To garner an AFSCME automatic endorsement, a legislator must compile a 100 percent AFSCME voting record in the previous session (in this case, the 2009 session) and be running for the same office. The names of candidates who have gained automatic endorsements are denoted in boldface below.

We have also included endorsements from local unions that have been forwarded to us. That list is highlighted by our own Pat Riggs-Henson, the longtime Local 2831 and Council 75 activist currently in a runoff for Lane County Commissioner.

Oregon AFSCME utilizes a democratic endorsement process. Candidates are required to fill out a questionnaire and then interview before a panel of union members; that panel then gives its endorsement recommendations to the union's Political Action Committee (PAC). After review, the PAC forwards those recommendations to the full Oregon AFSCME Executive Board, which has the final say on endorsements. You will find a link to a more detailed explanation of the union's endorsement and contribution process at the top of the Election Central page. If you have any questions, contact Oregon AFSCME Second Vice President Bryan Branstetter, who serves as the PAC Chair.
